Nederland, Summer Road Project

Hello Friends and Volunteers,

Nederland Saws and Slaws is asking for volunteers to help on Saturday, August 23rd with a large emergency egress fuels reduction project on the Summer Road in Nederland. The goal of this project is to reduce the fuel load on this road by 50% (thinning) to insure safe egress for residents and first responders during a wildfire event. This protects the only eastern egress for over 400 homes along Ridge Rd and Cold Springs. Please consider volunteering your morning to help make our community safer.

We need Volunteers for the following:
10 Certified Sawyers (S-212+) and S&S Certified Sawyers to cut and process trees
40 Swampers – Men, Women and Children to drag slash.
3 Large ATV’s w/ Operators to drag trees to the road
3 people to organize and run the BBQ Potluck

What: Summer Road Emergency Egress Fuels Reduction Project
When: Saturday, August 23 from 7:45AM until Noon with BBQ Potluck after
Where: Meet at intersection of Ridge Rd and Summer Access Rd (4300 Ridge Rd)
What to Bring: Your own gear (see below) and a side dish or dessert to share

To operate a chain saw during a S&S Event, the sawyer must be certified or have gone through the Saws and Slaws training class. This is a necessary safety precaution Saws and Slaws has adopted to keep the events and volunteers safe. Sawyers need to have their own equipment: saw, fuel mix, bar oil, wedges, felling ax, and PPE.

Safety Gear: All sawyers will be required to wear: Hardhat, Eye Protection, Ear Protection, Chaps, Boots, and Gloves. Swampers (people dragging slash) are strongly encouraged to wear: Eye Protection, Ear Protection, Gloves, and a Hardhat. We recommend that all participants wear long sleeve shirts and pants to minimize scratches from handling slash. S&S will have free foam ear protection available.

Note that the Summer Road will be closed during the project,.
