Coal Creek Canyon – Fire Mitigation, Blue Mountain Community

The Blue Mountain Community is excited to host June’s event.

Lyn Wagner has volunteered to spearhead the team’s efforts for the Blue Mountain Community and welcomes any assistance you can provide. Please direct all communications to her at lyn@milbatteries.com.

Saws and Slaws will be hosting an event at selected properties in Blue Mountain on Sunday, June 9, 2013. This volunteer, non-profit group focuses on fire mitigation to provide defensible zones around residences. They will also assist homeowners in removal of trees infested with pine beetles and dwarf mistletoe. Homeowners will not be charged for the labor involved in this event, but will help to provide a lunch for the volunteers and will cover the cost of renting an industrial sized chipper for use at the event. The long-term goal is to dramatically improve the health of the forest in Blue Mountain, and to mitigate our risk of wildfire. We hope this event will be the first of many over the coming months and years.

Cutting of trees is done by Saws and Slaws sawyers. Any residents wanting to join the sawyer crew must have completed a Saws and Slaws chainsaw safety course in advance of the event. Blue Mountain Forest Stewardship Team members and community volunteers will assist with slash removal and will provide lunch for all the workers. The event on June 9 will last about 4 hours, with a pot-luck lunch enjoyed by all after the work is done

What to bring/wear:
Long pants and long sleeves
Sturdy boots
Heavy gloves
Sunglasses or goggles
Hat with brim or visor
Hard hat, if you have one
Canteen or water bottle (we’ll have more water at the sites)
Rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows, tarps (please mark with your name)
Lawn or camp chair for lunch (please mark with your name)
Your own non-disposable camping type plate and cutlery, if you have them
A side dish to share at lunch, if you are able to do that.
