The team at Saws and Slaws has continued to be productive again this season helping neighbors with their forest health and fire mitigation and we will keep working on it as long as the weather allows. Last month we did Round 2 in the Hilltop neighborhood and the neighbors there are very pleased with the sheer amounts of fuel removed from their collective forest.   • Curbside Chipping, Twin Spruce Rd, CCC

    On Saturday, October 3rd, we will gather volunteers and follow the giant chipper up Twin Spruce and stop to chip slash piles that have been dragged to the “curb” and prepaid. Residents won’t have to haul their slash far and will enjoy the extremely reasonable rate of $30 for 20 minutes.  It can boggle the mind how much slash we can grind through in 20 minutes!!

  • CCC Beginner Chainsaw Class

    Please join us in the classroom Saturday, July 18 and then in the field on Sunday, July 19. This training will give you everything you need to get started with fire mitigation safely. You will be allowed to participate as a sawyer at your own level on future Saws and Slaws events. If you are a newbie, we will pair you up with a seasoned sawyer so that you can get the hang of cutting. Please acquire your Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) before the class. You will need a chainsaw, chaps, gloves, hard hat, ear and eye protection and leather boots. Bring a lunch/snacks, plus water/drinks. To sign up and…

    Ready to become a Saws and Slaws sawyer? All you need is to take this Chainsaw Safety Class and you’re in! Even if you have some experience with chainsaw cutting, it is our biggest goal to be as safe as possible at all of our events so we ask that anyone wanting to be a sawyer first take this class. If you have already taken this class and have attended at least 4 S&S events as a sawyer, you may be ready for the Intermediate Class (see calendar).   • Intermediate Chainsaw Safety Class

    Need some more training? We’ve got it!! Saturday, July 25th, in Nederland: 2 hours in the classroom and then 6 hours in the field. If you have run a saw for at least 4 Saws and Slaws events, then you are eligible to take this intermediate class. Sign up with Alan at nedforesthealth@gmail.com. Space is limited. Class will begin at the Nederland Firehouse at 8:30 and move into the field at 10:30.

    Event Date: Sunday, September 20th, 7:45 AM – Noon with a potluck to follow Event Location: Big Springs Park, 491 Lakeview Drive, Nederland Event Description: Saws and Slaws will be completing the mitigation of Big Springs Park as part of the Town’s effort to reduce fire danger in the Big Springs Neighborhood. We will meet near the end of Lakeview Drive (the lower road from which you enter B&F parking lot) in Nederland at 7:45 AM to sign-in and go through team assignments and a safety briefing.
